The Fundamentals of Discrete Particle Simulations

The use of DPM modelling can provide an efficient and cost-effective alternative to the practical experiments, pilot plants and test systems typically used to study (and in the case of industry, improve) the various processes relating to the above examples.

What we offer

The DPM training course offers a complete introduction to the construction and implementation of DPM simulations.

The course is entirely self-contained; however, a basic knowledge of programming is highly recommended. Those with a pre-existing knowledge of C++ will be able to gain a deeper appreciation of the techniques used and be able to perform more complex tasks.

Those wishing to improve their C++ skills before attending may be interested in taking our sister course, C++ for programmers, which runs immediately before the DPM training sessions.

The intensive two and a half day course will allow attendees to immediately begin producing fully-functioning DPM models of complex systems, equipping them with the necessary skills to continue utilising and expanding the knowledge gained after their training is complete.

The course is created and taught by a team of experts in the field of DPM simulation, who not only have direct experience in designing and writing DPM algorithms, but also in utilising them, both in research and industrial settings.

The course teaches a variety of concepts relating to the production and application of DPM models spread over a three day period:

Day 1

  • Introduction to simulation methods

  • What are DPM simulations?

  • Force and interaction laws for different materials

  • Simple implementation – producing your first simulation

Day 2

More advanced features

Morning session – More complex geometries:

  • Insertion and deletion boundaries

  • Finite walls

  • Periodic boundaries

  • Moving walls

  • Screw feeders

Afternoon session – Calibrating your simulations:

  • Calibrating force laws to match real particles

  • Choosing particle properties calibration and validation

  • Iterating towards reality!

Day 3

  • Analysing and Understanding DPM data

  • Understanding the output of a DPM simulation

  • Post-processing techniques

  • Presenting your results

In addition to learning general DPM techniques, attendees will be specifically instructed in how to use the world-leading MercuryDPM simulation software. MercuryDPM is a freely available open-source software package, meaning that upon finishing the course, participants can continue to produce DPM simulations, free of charge.

By utilising simulation methods such as MercuryDPM, it is possible to gain insight into the behaviours of an industrial system before beginning construction of any form, allowing a multitude of possible issues to be avoided at the planning stage, and therefore potentially saving considerable amounts of time, effort and money.
